Opelika Middle School Professional Development

Presented by:
Rita Cunningham, Science Teacher
Don Jones, Health/PE Teacher
Deborah Lindsey, Technology Teacher
Jenny McAlister, Special Education Teacher

A presentation was made to the entire faculty of Opelika Middle School introducing the principles of Universal Design for Learning. The introduction was given by Jenny McAlister and included a six minute video presenting the UDL principles and examples in classrooms. Rita Cunningham then showed teachers how to set up an account to use the CAST Book Builder. After each teacher had an account, she showed them how to create their own books. Teachers were given a few minutes to try this on their own. Don Jones followed by introducing teachers to several magnifiers and teachers were able to use the virtual magnifier to view web pages of their choice. Next, Deborah Lindsey showed us all the benefits of having CleverKeys installed on our computers. These benefits included a dictionary, thesarus, and translator. Lastly, Jenny McAlister introduced this website to teachers and showed them where they could find a list of other available tools as well as Power Point files of our presentations.
